TEXT: DANIEL 1:7-9
KEY VERSE: DANIEL 1: 8 But Daniel purposed in his heart that he will not defile himself with the portion of the king’s meat, or with the wine which he drunk. Wherefore, he requested of the priest of the eunuch that he might not defile himself.
There was no meeting between Daniel, Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego to arrive at their personal convictions. It was a matter of individual choice. It was not that they held a meeting together.
Godliness differs in grace from person to person. Every man shall stand before God. The practice of righteousness is neither communal nor congregational. It is not of multitudes but is individualistic, personalized.
Daniel expressed what was in him irrespective of the other three children; whatever was their own thought or mindset. Whether their own godliness can take what Daniel has taken now or not. He did not consult with them. Now what brought this purpose of heart? Remember, these people were selected by the king and placed on a special diet because the king reasoned that the types of food eaten contributes to intelligence.
Balanced diet provides health, good health. With the king’s high understanding of nutrition, he decided that the type of food he ate should be the type of food these special children should eat, so that as the food nourish him, being king, he had received various kinds of advice of what to eat and what not to eat. Being king he had the money to buy all kinds of food; he had all the quality foods and commanded that the youths in the intelligence school should be served from his table.
Daniel knew they were sacrificed to idols and purposed not to eat them. I will not play allegiance to demons and satanism. I will not play and eat freely that which is given to the enemy of Jehovah. It is defilement. It will weaken my faith. It will affect my personal commitment. It will make God frown at me and turn away from me.
Note that Muslims make enchantments upon animals before they kill them. “The god we worship, sanctify this meat and let your name be upon it as we kill it.”
Thought for the day: Believers should not partake in Sallah festival foods which are sacrificed to devils.
