2Cor.13.5 says, “Examine yourselves, whether ye be in the faith; prove your selves. Know ye not your selves, how that Jesus Christ is in you, except ye be reprobates?”
Self-examination is the practice of examining oneself to discover one’s true condition.
The Christian should daily or regularly examine himself to enable him to KNOW himself, whether he is still standing in the original faith or not. Or, to enable him to ascertain the true state of his relationship with God.
A Christian who does not practice this regularly will not know when backsliding, sin, or worldliness will start creeping into his or her life.
Because of the failure of self-examination, Ephraim did not know when gray hair started growing on his hair.
Here is the case of Ephraim in Hos.7.9, “Strangers have devoured his strength, and he knoweth it not: yea, gray hairs are here and there upon him, yet he knoweth not.” He would have known if he was examining himself regularly.
Things That Show You Are Still In The Faith
When you examine yourself and discover the following seven things, that means you are still in the faith.
On the order hand, if you examine yourself and did not find any of the following, that means you are not in the faith:
- You will find hatred for sin.
- You will see victory over sin in your life.
- You will see a genuine love for God.
- You will see strong love for God.
- You will see a lack of interest in worldliness.
- You will see a willingness to please God always and in everything.
- You will see fervent love for the brethren.
- You will see the restlessness in your conscience if you mistakenly do or say anything contrary to God’s word.
It is very important to examine every area of yourself.
The following areas should be examined closely with the word of God:
- Your heart
- Your words
- Your relationships
- Your giving
- Your emotions
- Your use of money and time.
- Your thoughts & imagination
- Your prayer life
- Your evangelism life
- Your faith life
- Your church attendance or fellowship with God and the brethren. And, any other area the Spirit of God will lead you to examine.
Dear reader, how is your work with God? Are you still in faith? Are you still strong? Are you still whole-heartedly obedient to God? When last did you examine yourself?
Sit up! It is time to examine yourself.
